Water is vital for good health. It is important to know that about 60% of the body is made of water. Water serves to carry substances such as vitamins, minerals, hormones, and oxygen around the body in the bloodstream. It also helps cleanse the body of poisons and waste products. It helps control body temperature and acts as a lubricant in joints. Moreover, we lose a great amount of water through sweat, feces, and urine and we must replace it by drinking more water. It might seem a little boring compared to a cup of tea or coffee but the best thing you can drink is plain water or diluted fruit juice.
Coffee, cola, energy drinks, and tea sometimes have side effects depending on the quantity consumed and the brew strengths. Some of these side effects may include restlessness, heart palpitations, nervousness, irritability, insomnia, and headaches.
It’s likely you are addicted to caffeine if you drink more than two cups of coffee, tea, cola, or energy drinks regularly. To reduce stress and heighten your well-being, it is better to remove this toxin from your diet and the result will be seen almost immediately.
It is essential to drink plenty of water at least five to seven glasses a day. It’s usually a struggle for a lot of people to drink that amount of water so it can be flavored with some citrus such as a dash of fresh orange, lemon, or lime juice. Here are some tips to increase your fluid intake and reap the benefits of water:
1. If you are finding it difficult to drink normal water, add a beverage to every snack or meal.
2. You are likely to drink more fluids if you like the way it tastes so choose a beverage you like.
3. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from food so there is a need to eat more fruits and vegetables as their high-water content will add to your hydration.
4. Always keep a bottle of water close to you. Whether in your car, bag, or desk.
5. Try to keep track of your water intake. Don’t drink water only when you are thirsty.
Water helps maintain the balance of bodily fluids which is a very important part of us. The functions of these fluids include absorption, digestion, circulation maintaining of body temperature, transportation of nutrients, and creation of saliva, amongst others. When the body is low on fluids, the brain triggers the thirst mechanisms and you should take those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, or milk but not alcohol. Alcohol causes excess excretion of fluids which can lead to dehydration as it interferes with the body’s brain and kidney communication.
Through our posterior glands, our brains communicate with the kidneys how much water to hold unto or excrete as urine and this can be interfered with in the presence of alcohol.
